What causes my chimney to smell?
An excessive amount of creosote in the flue or rain entering the chimney from the top, due to not having a cap, may cause this odor.

Yes. On most occassions.
What is creosote?

How can creosote be prevented?
Creosote can not be prevented, but can be reduced depending on the efficiency of the appliance, the type of wood that is burned, and the customer's burning habits. Regular maintenance should be conducted by a certified chimney sweep.
